INTRODUCTION TO ACTING: COURSE #893

This introductory class is for any student who wants to begin or improve his/her acting and performance skills. This class will be a fast paced workshop format designed to strengthen the voice, acting, observation, movement and listening skills through exercises in improvisation, theater games, scene study and theater exercises. The main focus of the class is to build ensemble and begin to strengthen resources as an actor. Students will rehearse and perform selected scenes and monologues for peers. Acting styles will periodically be studied through the use of video and live performance. Vocabulary of the theater and performance and rehearsal expectations and etiquette will be stressed.
ADVANCED ACTING: COURSE #899

Prerequisites: Introduction to Acting or permission of instructor

This class is for any student who has taken Introduction to Acting or who has experience in acting. This course will provide a more advanced curriculum in acting with a focus on character development and script analysis. This course includes work on voice,
improvisation, body language, monologues and movement for the stage. Reading, analysis and performance of dramatic texts from various periods of theater history will be a part of the course. Students will have the opportunity to critique each other in scenes and perform for peers. A final evening performance of scenes will be produced for family and friends. Assignments will include reading and analysis of plays from various eras of theater history. Performance and analysis of scenes for peers will be a staple of the class. Acting styles will be studied periodically through the use of video and live performance. Students will be exposed to various acting styles, such as those of Sanford Meisner, Constantine Stanislavski, Viewpoints, Laban and Michael Chekov.

Background to the Curriculum
Instructor: Linda Potter
This course will focus on methods to unlock the life of a script in a production. Studies will include historic styles, blocking, casting, auditioning, working with designers, rehearsing, technical rehearsals, marketing, and managing a theatrical production. At theconclusion of this class, students will be expected to direct one ten-minute play for the public. Assignments include play reading, play analysis, creation of rehearsal schedules, rehearsals with actors, and preparation for production. It is expected that directors will rehearse with actors outside of class time.

INTRODUCTION TO TECHNICAL THEATRE: COURSE #887

Instructor: Brendan Hearn
This course will introduce students to basic technical operation and design for the theatre. Students will work in both classroom and hands-on settings to gain an understanding in lighting, sound, and basic rigging principles. Projects, participation, and some evaluations contribute to grade. Students are encouraged to participate in Proscenium Circus productions for extra credit. Enrolled students are part of the ABRHS Technical Production Staff and are eligible for paid work opportunities throughout the year.
